These images are created from pattern maps that represent graphical relationships between pairs of prime numbers. In the initial set, the pattern maps work with 1&2, 1&3 and 1&5. The basic concept for the pattern map is to create a square, lay out a grid within the square, and then starting in any corner, draw a line that angles out from the corner in a ratio of the two numbers selected for the pattern. The line is drawn to the opposing side or corner. Once the line encounters the boundary, it's direction is then reversed. Some patterns are filled by simply continuing this method until the pattern reaches the starting point, others require initially starting in one corner, ending in that same corner and then repeating the process starting in the opposing corner. Some patterns then have additional lines added to create more details. The pattern then is finished by filling alternating blocks with color. There seems to be an almost infinite set of possible patterns that can be created.
The pattern maps are created in AutoSketch, exported and then converted to bitmaps. The resulting bitmaps are layered and extensively filtered. Color is added. Then the layers are blended together. The various layers are then further filtered and combined to create the final images.
I initially became interested in the base pattern maps many years ago and had created a few with pen and ink. This approach proved to be extremely time consuming and I put it aside after completing only a few pieces of work. The ability to create these with a computer and create the base patterns in just a few minutes has revitalized my interest in this work. The additional capabilities of being able to manipulate the colors and filter and layer the patterns allows me to far more fully realize my vision of where this work can lead.
This is the first set of these images, created in only a few days time. I plan on expanding my work in this area, next looking at 1&7, then exploring 2&3, 2&5, 3&5 and then 5&7 to see if they will provide similar results.
Update-03.03.2009: Many more patterns have been created. Images utilizing 1&7 and 3&5 have been added to this gallery.
